Male Pattern Baldness

Male pattern baldness is prevalent most countries, a condition that society has grown accustomed to. An estimated 85% of men in the United States are affected by some form of this condition by the age of 50.  Most men experience hair loss in some form. A receding hairline and thinning of the hair are most common forms of hair loss and should not be misconstrued as male pattern baldness. Let us take a look at the signs of male pattern baldness.  As the name suggests, it follows a typical pattern where hair falls in clusters and thins on the crown. The hairline gradually recedes in the form of an ‘M’ shape. This is caused by a hormonal and genetic predisposition commonly known as Alopecia. Genes are the most common cause of hair loss. Hair follicles are inherited from family members and those with DHT sensitivity are most likely to suffer from male pattern baldness. Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) is the male hormone that attaches to the androgen receptors and stops hair follicles from growing.

Male pattern baldness can occur at any age, as early as 21. It is considered to be an autoimmune disorder. Excess DHT causes inflammation of the scalp as the body rejects the hair follicles thinking them to be foreign objects. Although treatments are available it is difficult to find a cure since this is a combination of genetics and hormones. Understanding the underlying cause will help your doctor and dermatologist recommend the course of treatment. When the body rejects the hair follicles it produces Super Oxides. Your doctor might recommend a Super Oxide Dismutase treatment to address the issue. There are DHT inhibitors in the form of Minoxidil and Finastride that are approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). These reduce the levels of DHT and slowly start to promote hair growth. Hair transplants are another alternative, although this is a rather expensive choice.

Apart from topical treatments and oral drugs, there are several organic and natural products that could effectively treat the condition. Unrefined crude oil when rubbed on the scalp is said to stimulate the nerves thereby increasing blood flow and inducing hair growth. There are various oils that you may find in health food stores. Go natural. Try some of the natural oils like lavender, peppermint, and rosemary. Exercise regularly and follow a healthy diet since that is the best way to increase blood circulation and stimulate hair growth. Vitamin B6 is a good supplement that is also worth trying. Make sure you consult your doctor and make an informed decision on your line of treatment.
